It's ironic that, without Tony's interference, neither Riff nor Bernardo *might* have been killed in the first place. Neither pulled a knife until Riff interfered on Tony's behalf, and Riff ran out of Tony's arms right into Bernardo's knife. ~ ekedolphin

If the Jets had let Anita deliver her original message, instead of giving her justification for modifying it after they tried to rape her, Tony and Maria might have been together and Tony wouldn't have been shot by Chino.
